Architecture: Form, Space, and Order, Fourth Edition is the classic introduction to the basic vocabulary of architectural design, updated with new information on emerging trends and recent developments. This bestselling visual reference helps both students and professionals understand the vocabulary of architectural design by examining how space and form are ordered in the environment.

Essential and timeless, the fundamental elements of space and form still present a challenge to those who crave a deeper understanding. Taking a critical look at the evolution of spaces, Architecture distills complex concepts of design into a clear focus that inspires, bringing difficult abstractions to life. The book is illustrated throughout to demonstrate the concepts presented, and show the relationships between fundamental elements of architecture through the ages and across cultures. Topics include:

  • Primary elements and the principles of space design
  • Form and space, including light, view, openings, and enclosures
  • Organization of space, and the elements and relationships of circulation
  • Proportion and scale, including proportioning systems and anthropometry

This book was foundational in my architecture education.I had a copy that a friend bought to Europe from the MoMa bookstore back in the eighties. I lost it for another friend in the nineties and now I have a new one.

I've been a devoted fan of Ching's work since the 70s when I first picked up a copy of his 'Architectural Graphics,' which I still have as one of my most cherished [and now rather dog-eared] books. Getting hold of this fourth edition of Architecture, Form and Space has therefore been like a dream come true, and I really cannot praise the book highly enough.Ching is the master of producing clear, informative architectural diagrams and sketches and this is a truly rich collection. He used to write all the text himself in the early days, the whole book, but now of course it's all typeset in a typeface based on his original, freehand writing style, but who can blame him, as he's now into his 70s! The overall result is an intimate, stylish but substantive journey through the discipline of architectural design and outlines the tools that separate the practise of architecture from that of mere building. With a redemption code giving online access to more material, this is a wonderful package that I personally find impossible to fault. Fantastic.

This book is essentially a picture dictionary of architecture. It is packed with line drawings of the best quality. It is very didactic and very straightforward. The focus is on world architecture, so that every type of building gets a share of the book, and nothing is unduly left aside.Essential to understand the basics of the concepts and rationale of architectural practice, thinking and theory.Of value to both connoisseurs and practitioners.

The Architect-wanabe in me wanted to learn more about just "Form, Space and Order". I must that I wasn't disappointed: I appreciate both the presentation and the information in itself. Sure, you won't become a Master only by adding this title to your collection, but there's a lot to reflect about all along these pages. The CD inside is a good visual résumé of it all, so just take your time to practice the different steps, one after another...I also read some complains about Mr Ching drawing style, which maybe wasn't the best ever, according to some kind of experts (!?) I must say that I am very impressed by most of his drawings and that I would love to have even a small part of his skill!
