    Book details

Profusely illustrated with fine instances of architectural experimentation through the centuries, Experiencing Architecture manages to convey the intellectual excitement of superb design. From teacups, riding boots, golf balls, and underwater sculpture to the villas of Palladio and the fish-feeding pavilion of the Peking Winter Palace, the author ranges over the less-familiar byways of designing excellence. At one time, writes Rasmussen, "the entire community tool part in forming the dwellings and implements they used. The individual was in fruitful contact with these things; the anonymous houses were built with a natural feeling for place, materials and use and the result was a remarkably suitable comeliness. Today, in our highly civilized society, the houses which ordinary people are doomed to live in and gaze upon are on the whole without quality. We cannot, however, go back to the old method of personally supervised handicrafts. We must strive to advance by arousing interest in and understanding of the work the architect does. The basis of competent professionalism is a sympathetic and knowledgeable group of amateurs, of non-professional art lovers."

Great book if you have an interest in or starting an architecture degree or anyone looking to broaden their mind in the understanding of how we can perceive space and objects in different ways. Enlightening and thought provoking book that will change the way that you understand the visual world. Although quite a short read, Rasmussen has wonderfully divided the book into memorable chapters that are great to use as reference. Therefore it is a great book to add to your library and find use for again and again.

Years ago I wanted to learn something about architecture. I've always been interested in buildings: the beauty and the technology behind. This book served the purpose of giving an introduction and explanation of the basic concepts very well. It managed to answer the why and how questions on different levels of scale, as well in details as in general concepts. Most important of all it enforced my appreciation of architecture as a vital and interesting piece of art. Now having read tens of books more on the subject, I would still choose this one as the book to begin with.

What is architecture? You might wanna rethink how we understand it. It's easy to read, funny and provides an in depth explanation. Definitely a recommendation.

Wonderful book, read it. Anyone interested in why buildings can be exciting, or why buildings can be atrocities (in lumpen, lightless degradation) read this book: this book is a passionate essay on beauty.
